  2.           NOTES ON THIS UNREGISTERED VERSION OF POWERBOARD BBS

  5. SHAREWARE MARKETING CONCEPT
  6. ---------------------------

  8. This unregistered version of Powerboard is intended to provide you with a
  9. means of evaluating the software before purchasing your own license (i.e.
  10. try before you buy).  This is known as the "shareware marketing concept."
  11.  
  12. While all the tools needed to operate a completely functional bulletin
  13. board system are included in this package, there are some utilities that
  14. are not included.  They will be listed and described later in this document.
  15.  
  16. The main Powerboard BBS program (pboard.exe) is the same as the pboard.exe
  17. that you will receive when you register the software, with a few exceptions.
  18. One is that you will notice two Shareware Notifcation Screens.  One screen
  19. appears both to you (the SysOp) and the user at log-in.  The other screen
  20. appears just to you (the SysOp) whenever you shut down the BBS.  Also, this
  21. unregistered version of Powerboard supports two nodes, or incoming phone
  22. lines, while our least expensive registered version supports four nodes.
  23. The two node support gives you the ability to evaluate the multinode
  24. functions of the Powerboard software, such as multinode chat and remote
  25. Sysop functions dealing with remote node control.
  26.  
  27. UTILITIES NOT INCLUDED IN THIS UNREGISTERED VERSION
  28. ---------------------------------------------------

  30. Powerboard BBS is one of the most comprehensive bulletin board software
  31. packages available today.  Therefore, there are quite a few utility
  32. programs made for it.  The essential utility programs (such as PBConfig -
  33. main configuration program, EVConfig - event setup program, MenuCfg - menu
  34. editor, AreaCfg - conference manager, and others) are included.
  35.  
  36. However, mainly in the interest of allowing this unregistered version to
  37. be transmitted quickly via modem (from online services, the Internet, and
  38. BBS'es), some utility programs are not included.  Admittedly, this
  39. exclusion of some utilities which make managing the BBS easier and more
  40. enjoyable is also done to provide an incentive for people to purchase the
  41. product.

  43. The following is a list of utilities that are not included, along with
  44. their descriptions.

  46. UTILITY                 DESCRIPTION

  48. PBSTRING                Program to allow customization of text strings
  49.                         that are shown to the Sysop and user on the BBS.
  50.                         For example, if you're interested in changing the
  51.                         text for "Enter your name here" to something else,
  52.                         you would use this program.
  53.  
  54.                         Also, by using PBString, a Sysop can actually
  55.                         translate the entire BBS -- both Sysop and User
  56.                         sides -- to another language.
  57.  
  58. FILESORT                Sort files appearing in the file area in
  59.                         alphabetical order.
  60.  
  61. FILELIST                Create a master file listing.
  62.  
  63. MSGEDIT                 Allows editing of messages that have already been
  64.                         entered.  With MSGEDIT, you can change a message's
  65.                         sent date, sent time, received flag, message body,
  66.                         description, etc.
  67.  
  68. FILEEDIT                File Area Manager.  This utility becomes
  69.                         especially helpful when you amass a large number
  70.                         of files on your system.  When the number of
  71.                         files you have is small, managing your BBS with
  72.                         the commands on the file menu (such as M for move
  73.                         file) is the best way to handle things.  But when
  74.                         you have large numbers of files, FILEEDIT does
  75.                         the job better.  FILEEDIT also offers functions
  76.                         such as FILE_ID.DIZ importing, file sorting,
  77.                         offline file management, and more.

  79. PBPACK                  When a user selects K to kill a message in a
  80.                         message area, the message is not actually
  81.                         removed from disk automatically.  Instead, it
  82.                         is flagged for deletion and is not removed until
  83.                         a message base packer (i.e. PBPACK) is run.
  84.                         PBPACK also offers functions for deleting
  85.                         messages by date and number of days old, for
  86.                         keeping only a certain number of messages in
  87.                         a conference, damaged message base repair, and
  88.                         more.

  90. FCHECK                  FCHECK is a utility that will run through your
  91.                         file area listings and correct any problems
  92.                         found with the listings themselves -- such as
  93.                         incorrect file sizes, non-existant files, etc.

  95. PBDIAG                  Powerboard Diagnostics utility.  PBDIAG can
  96.                         create helpful reports on your system which
  97.                         you can use for troubleshooting and configuration
  98.                         purposes.

  100. BDATCFG                 Utility that allows customization of the
  101.                         appearance of the bottom status line which
  102.                         appears on the Sysop's screen while a user
  103.                         is online.

  105. SUPPORT POLICY
  106. --------------

  108. NuIQ Software offers unlimited support via e-mail and our support BBS
  109. for unregistered customers.  We also offer voice support to unregistered
  110. users for a period of one month.  That is, you will be eligable for voice
  111. technical support from the first day you call our technical support
  112. department to thirty days after.
  113.  
  114. Registered users of Powerboard BBS are eligable to unlimited support
  115. via e-mail and our support BBS as well.  They are also eligable to support
  116. via voice telephone for a period of one year from when they purchase the
  117. product.  After that first year, support renewal fees are $75 per year.
  118. The $75 support renewal fee also entitles one to an additional year's
  119. subscription to "The Sysop Page", mentioned below.
